Salivary Gland Tumors

Are tumors in the Parotid-Auricular salivary glands generally malignant?
No. Sub-ear salivary gland tumors are usually benign. About 20% are malignant.

How to understand whether a salivary gland tumor is malignant or benign?
Benign tumors develop slowly and often have a capsule around them. Most of them can be played under the skin. Malignant tumors that develop in the salivary glands grow quickly and become tightly adherent to the skin and surrounding tissues. After the tumor is removed, microscopic examination determines whether the tumor is malignant or benign. Fine needle biopsy can provide information before surgery.

Will digestive power or saliva production be affected by removing one of the salivary glands?
No.

Is surgery on the glands dangerous?
Surgeries to remove the salivary glands under the ear are both difficult and long-lasting. Injury to the facial nerves passing through the salivary glands under the ear causes partial or complete paralysis of the face.

What type of anesthesia is used in salivary gland surgeries?
General anesthesia is used for major surgeries, and local anesthesia is used for minor surgeries.

Are there any disfiguring scars left after surgery on the salivary glands under the ear?
No. After the wounds heal completely within a few months, only a tiny white line remains.

Is it always possible to prevent damage to the facial nerve when a tumor is surgically removed from the sub-auricular salivary glands?
No. In some cases, when removing an overgrown tumor from the salivary glands under the ear, it may be necessary to touch this nerve and in some cases even cut off a part of it.

How long should the hospital stay be after salivary gland surgery?
The majority of patients can leave the hospital one week after surgery.

How is a tumor in the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands treated?
By removing the gland completely by surgical intervention.

Are surgeries successful for tumors developed in the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands?
Yes; The success rate in early cases is almost one hundred percent.
